Scaling
Dental scaling, a fundamental component of oral hygiene, is a dental procedure designed to remove plaque and tartar buildup from the teeth and along the gumline. Plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, food particles, and saliva, forms continuously on teeth. When plaque isn’t adequately removed through regular brushing and flossing, it hardens into tartar or calculus, which can lead to more severe dental issues, including gum disease and cavities. Scaling is performed by a dental hygienist or dentist using specialized instruments like scalers and curettes. These tools carefully scrape away the accumulated plaque and tartar, particularly in areas that are difficult to reach with regular oral care practices. After scaling, the teeth are polished to remove surface stains and create a smooth surface less prone to plaque buildup. Regular dental scaling, typically recommended every six months, plays a crucial role in maintaining optimal oral health, preventing bad breath, gum inflammation, and more serious conditions like periodontitis. It contributes to a clean, fresh, and attractive smile while reducing the risk of dental problems in the long term.
